Madurai Kamaraj University

Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) is a public state university located in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, established in 1966. Named after the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, K. Kamaraj, the university has grown into one of the largest residential universities in India, serving over 1,30,000 students through its main campus, constituent colleges, and affiliated institutions across southern Tamil Nadu. The university operates on a sprawling 750-acre campus and is recognized for its strong research orientation, with 77 affiliated colleges and 20 constituent colleges under its jurisdiction. The university offers a comprehensive range of academic programs spanning arts, science, commerce, management, engineering, and technology through its 24 academic departments and schools. MKU is particularly noted for its School of Biotechnology, Department of Computer Science, and various science departments that have received special assistance from UGC. The institution has made significant strides in research output, with numerous funded projects from DST, DBT, CSIR, and other national agencies. Its distance education wing (DDE) extends educational access to working professionals and remote learners across the region. In recent years, MKU has achieved notable recognition, securing NAAC 'A++' grade with a CGPA of 3.61 in its 2023 re-accreditation cycle—the highest possible grade. The university ranks 63rd among Indian universities in NIRF 2024 and holds UGC 12B status, enabling it to receive central assistance for research. The campus features extensive infrastructure including central library, hostels, sports facilities, and research centers, though students note variability in facilities between main campus departments and affiliated colleges.
